In a recently published study conducted at Stanford University (USA), using a range of parameters for each scientist’s research contribution and influence, million scientists data from Scopus database were analysed. According to this study 971 Greek scientists are contained in the global top 2%, among which 130 researchers from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). 21 Professors from the School of Civil Engineering of NTUA are among the top 2% researchers in the world (5 within the top-ten of NTUA), while 6 of them from the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering, (5 within the top-eleven of the School of Civil Engineering). ![]()
The NTUA Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering organised with great success a Scientific Workshop titled “Telematics boosting mobility behaviour” which took place at the NTUA Campus in Athens on November 22nd, 2023.
The rapid spread of innovative technologies in the field of telematics creates new opportunities to monitor, evaluate and improve driver behaviour through feedback tools, providing incentives to drivers for safer and greener behaviour, with spectacular results.
During this workshop, the new interactive SafeRoadsMap tool for safe and green travelling in Greece has been released.
The examinations of the Diploma Theses of the undergraduate students of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering for the examination period of October 2023 took place with great success from Wednesday November 1st to Friday November 3rd 2023, at Railways Amphitheatre and at teaching room 109.
NTUA Professor Eleni Vlahogianni has received the 2017–2020 ITSM Outstanding Paper Award. The Award Judging Panel’s decision is based on the consideration of the following decision-making criteria: originality, citations, impact and importance. The examination of the Diploma Theses of the undergraduate students of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering for the examination period of July 2023 took place with great success on Monday July 17th and on Tuesday July 18th 2023, at Railways Amphitheatre.

The distinguished lecture of Professor Andreas Loizos at the International Conference on Geophysics for GPR “12th International Workshop on Advanced Ground Penetrating Radar” held on 5-7 July 2023 in Lisbon with great success. The topic of the lecture “Advances and Challenges on GPR in Pavement Infrastructure” was about the latest developments in geophysics and radar in transportation infrastructure projects, with a special emphasis on the impact of AI.
Dr. Marko Ševrović Associate Professor at the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences of the University of Zagreb, gave a lecture which took place with great success on Friday, June 23rd 2023 at 13.30 at the Amphitheater of Railways and Transport of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of NTUA, entitled “Road Infrastructure Safety Assessments – the iRAP Methodology“.
Prof. Dr. Klaus Bogenberger , Chair of Traffic Engineering and Control at Technical University of Munich, gave a lecture which took place with great success on Friday, June 9th 2023 at the Amphitheater of Railways and Transport of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of NTUA, entitled “The MobilityCoin System”.
Professor Emeritus John Golias was appointed Minister of Infrastructure and Transport at the new transitional Government of Greece.
Professor Emeritus John Golias has been the Director of Traffic Engineering Laboratory of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering, Dean of the School of Civil Engineering and Rector of National Technical University of Athens. He has been involved in all areas of transportation planning and engineering sector for more than 40 years through numerous research projects, engineering studies and committees in Greece and abroad and he is the author of a great number of published scientific papers, cited widely worldwide. He served also as Secretary General of the Ministry of Transport during the Athens 2004 Olympic Games and Chairman of the Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers.
NTUA within the framework of the Seventh UN Global Road Safety Week organised with great success a Scientific Workshop titled “Road Safety Research Challenges” which was held at the Railways and Transport Laboratory (and online) on May 19th, 2023 .
The objective of this Workshop was to highlight through an intensive flow of presentations the main findings and challenges of key road safety research projects carried out within the NTUA Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering.

The Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of Civil Engineering School at the National Technical University of Athens was ranked 4th in Europe this year and 26th worldwide among all Transportation Departments, with the best performance among all NTUA and Greek Universities Departments. This ranking is produced by EduRank‘s final score based on three parts: 45% Research performance, 45% Non-academic prominence and 10% Alumni score. Departments’ Director George Yannis stated that: “the persistence in scientific excellence of our highly qualified transportation engineers contributes to a future with efficient, green and safe transport systems in Greece, in Europe and globally”. ![]()
The Laboratory of Railways and Transport of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of NTUA organized with great success on Wednesday 22-02-2023 between 16:30-19:30 an online workshop entitled: “Data requirements for freight transport planning and operation” in the framework of the research infrastructure “ENIRISST – Intelligent Research Infrastructure in Shipping, Supply Chain, and Transport”.
The global publisher Springer published recently the Book Public Transport Optimization written by NTUA Assistant Professor Konstantinos Gkiotsalitis. Read more

Maria Saloniti student of the School of Civil Engineering NTUA, has been awarded with “Apostolos Chr. Yotis” Award, for the highest average of all courses of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering in relation to her fellow student with whom she equaled (9.33) in the mandatory courses “Roads Geometric Design” (5th semester), “Roads Construction” (6th semester) and at the mandatory of cycle course “Design of Road and Airfield Pavements” (7th semester), during the academic year 2021-2022.
