Eng. Roberto Ventura, Assistant Professor at the University of Brescia (Italy), gave a lecture which took place on Wednesday, October 2nd 2024 at the Amphitheater of Railways and Transport of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of NTUA, entitled “Traffic Hazard on Main Road Bridges: Real-Time Evaluation and Management of the Risk Related to Design Load Overcoming Events”.
In this lecture, we will explore the risk of bridges within road networks due to traffic load hazards, a key focus of Eng. Ventura’s research. Bridges can experience failures that undermine their serviceability or even lead to collapse. Since traffic load hazards are among the primary causes of bridge failures, evaluating the associated risk and implementing real-time risk management strategies are essential for ensuring the safety of road infrastructures. During summer holidays, the restoration of the traffic signs of the central part of the road network of NTUA Zografou campus was completed.
A total of: 90 signs marking dangerous places, 125 regulatory signs and 3 convex mirrors were installed with galvanized metal poles. The traffic signs have been placed according to Road Design Guidelines Manual (OMOE-KSO, OMOE-K3) and the Highway code, based on a traffic study prepared and provided by the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of the School of Civil Engineering.
Candidates should have a Master’s degree in civil engineering or an equivalent, with a degree concentration in landslide or other natural hazard engineering, or geotechnical engineering with an
emphasis on slope stability in unsaturated soils, or geological engineering/engineering geology with an emphasis on modeling physical systems under climate forcings, or geo-engineering with an emphasis on modeling and analytics of remotely sensed hillslope data.

As part of the educational activities of the transportation engineering cycle of the School of Civil Engineering of NTUA, an educational visit was held to Polis Park Parking Lot, Children’s Hospital Square (Goudi) on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. During the visit the students of the 8th semester had the opportunity to learn about the basic issues related to the organization, management and exploitation of parking lots and to understand in practice the application of parking theory.

The Professor and Director of the Department of Transportation Planning Engineering of the School of Civil Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) George Yannis, has started a campaign to run 30 Marathons in 30 months in order to promote the 30km/h speed limit in cities. Running with the emblem of the NTUA, Prometheus the Fire-bearer, he has already successfully completed 24 Marathons in 24 months, all performing sub 4-hours, and there are 6 remaining Marathons to complete his challenge in November 2024 at the Athens Marathon.
