Dr Sophia A. Vardaki holds a diploma in Surveying Engineering and a Ph.D. in Transportation Engineering with a focus on road safety. She is currently a senior researcher and laboratory teaching staff at the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens, as well as an external freelance researcher for the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas/Hellenic Institute of Transport. She has over 25 years of experience in R&D activities and has acted as a principal investigator and co-investigator in several European and National Research projects. Furthermore, Dr. Vardaki has been working as a freelance consultant in highway design and safety projects and Road Safety Audits since 1987. Dr. Vardaki’s expertise and research/professional interests include driver behaviour and attitudes, road safety and human factors issues, Safe System approach to road traffic, drivers’ interaction with the road environment, and traffic safety culture. She has worked on driving performance evaluation of elders; road safety audits, human factors in road design and operations, and surveys and field observations. Her published work includes more than 65 publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. She is also the author / co-author of road safety educational material in road safety for highway engineers and undergraduate students in the school of Civil Engineering as well as for drivers and vulnerable road users (adolescents, older drivers). Dr. Vardaki is a member of several professional and scientific organisations and committees such as TRB, Working Group of Human Factors Guidelines for Road Systems, Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers, Technical Chamber of Greece. She is also a reviewer in a number of international scientific journals and conferences.
