George Kanellaidis has taught Road Design and Engineering in the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) since 1986.

He has devoted many years of academic activity to improving road safety in Greece. He was Scientific Coordinator for the development of the three Strategic Plans for improving road safety in Greece for the periods 2011-2020, 2006-2010 and 2001-2005. He presented the Strategic Plan for the period 2011-2020 at the meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Road Safety at the Presidential Palace, which was presided over by the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Karolos Papoulias (22 April 2013), and also at the meeting of the Cross-Party Parliamentary Committee on Road Safety (5 December 2013). He was the keynote speaker at the event on “Strategic Planning to improve Road Safety in Greece” organized by the National Technical University of Athens under the aegis of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Karolos Papoulias at the Old Parliament (5 May 2008). On July 16 2014, he was awarded the Gold Cross of the Order of Honour by the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Karolos Papoulias for developing the Road Safety Strategy in Greece.

He was Scientific Coordinator in research projects awarded to the NTUA by Greek bodies (“Development of a Methodology for identifying hazardous locations in the inter-urban road network of Greece”, “Specifications for the implementation of the Road Safety Audit on the Egnatia Motorway”, etc.) and by the European Union (Coordinator of “ARROWS” (Advanced Research On Road Workzone Safety Standards In Europe), “SAFESTAR” (Safety Standards For Road Design And Redesign), Development of measures “PROMISING” (Promotion of measures with regard to mobility integrated with safety, taking into account the inexperience of vulnerable user groups), etc.

He has published 50 papers in international scientific journals and 46 in conference proceedings, which have a high citation count. His research work has also been cited in the most recent Canadian and Australian Guidelines and in equivalent publications by the United States Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). He has presented scientific papers at a number of national and international Road Design and Road Safety conferences, often as a guest speaker and keynote speaker. He is a reviewer for international journals.

He has many years of professional experience in transport infrastructure and road safety, providing advisory services to bodies in Greece (Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, PATHE Motorway Agency, Egnatia Motorway Agency, Olympia Motorway Agency, Ionia Motorway Agency, etc.) and internationally (European Commission, Australian Road Research Board [ARRB], Danish Road Institute [DRI], etc.]. He was president of the NTUA Technical Council for 2000-2013.
