Abstract: Empirical research on the effects of ride-hailing has been hampered by a lack of detailed data on the timing and location of ride-hailing trips.  This research overcomes that limitation by using a unique Big Data set scraped from the Application Programming Interfaces of Uber and Lyft.  We combine these data with several complementary and independently collected data sets to measure the effect of ride-hailing on traffic congestion, transit ridership and traffic safety in San Francisco.  Through these examples, this talk illustrates several of the practical considerations important to working with Big Data to understand the transportation system.

Bio: Dr. Greg Erhardt is an associate professor of civil engineering at the University of Kentucky and a Hans Fischer Fellow at the Technical University of Munich.  He also serves as Associate Director for the T-SCORE Center, a consortium of four US universities focused on applied public transit research.  Prior to earning his PhD, Dr. Erhardt spent 13 years in practice working in the public and private sectors in the US and the UK.  He holds a PhD from the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) at University College London a master’s degree in transportation systems analysis from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering from Cornell University.
