Apostolos Yotis, Emeritus Professor of the School of Civil Engineering NTUA and for many years Chairman of the School, Director of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering and of the Highway Engineering Laboratory, passed away on August 19th 2016.
Evangelos Mintsis, PhD Candidate at the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering in the School of Civil Engineering NTUA, has been awarded a scholarship within the context of the IKY-SIEMENS Research Program for Excellence regarding his dissertation entitled “Analysis and Upgrade of the Operations of Cooperative Intelligent Transportations Systems in Urban Networks”.
The examination of the Diploma Theses of the undergraduate students of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering took place with great success on July, 11th and 15th, 2016.
Dr. Sylvain Lassarre, Emeritus Research Director of the French Institute of Science and Technology for Transport, Development and Networks (IFSTTAR) gave an invited lecture titled: “Decision, Knowledge and Science in road safety” which took place with great success on June 24th 2016, at the Amphitheater of Railways and Transport of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of NTUA”.
Dr. Eric J. Gonzales Assistant Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UMass Amherst gave an invited lecture titled: “Modeling taxis and demand responsive transit systems” which took place with great success on May 30th 2016, at the Amphitheater of Railways and Transport of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of NTUA”.
Panagiotis Papantoniou, PhD Research Associate at the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering in the School of Civil Engineering NTUA, has been awarded with the “European Friedrich-List-Prize, 2016” in transport by the European Platform of Transport Sciences EPTS and the Young Forum of European Transport Sciences (YFE) for his PhD Dissertation titled: ‘Risk factors, driver behaviour and accident probability. The case of distracted driving‘.
On Tuesday 17 May 2016, Professor George Yannis, Head of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of NTUA presented the transportation engineering courses cycle to the Civil Engineering undergraduate students of the 6th semester, within the framework of the information event for the courses’ cycles organized by the School of Civil Engineering.
NTUA presentation titled: ‘Mobility tests as a predictor of driving behavior of patients with Parkinson’s disease‘ won the best applied research award of scientific presentation paper at the 42nd Panhellenic Medical Conference, which took place on 11-14 May in Athens.

The FiA Region I organizes a Europe-wide Contest with the theme “How would you revolutionise transport in the future?” for young people aged from 18 to 22 in order to promote innovative thinking for the improvement of traffic and transportation in cities across Europe (and the world). The participants can submit their concept via “Transport Genius” website by 6 March 2016. 
Athanasios Theofilatos, Panagiotis Papantoniou, Emmanouil Barmpounakis, Ioanna Pagoni and Dimosthenis Pavlou PhD students at the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of NTUA were awarded with the NTUA Thomaidion Award for outstanding publications in scientific journals or conferences proceedings for the year 2014. 
The New Year Event of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering took place with great success on Wednesday, January 27th , 2016, at 15:00, at the Amphitheater of Railways and Transport with the participation of more than 80 members and students of the Department and the School of Civil Engineering.

More than 200 colleagues and friends attended the Dimitris Tsamboulas (1950-2014) Memorial organised by NTUA Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering (DTPE) on Thursday 17 December 2015 at the NTUA Civil Engineering School Auditorium. During the Memorial Event it was announced that one classroom at the NTUA DTPE was named Dimitris Tsamboulas and that an award Dimitris Tsamboulas will be granted every two years by NTUA DTPE and the Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers for the best student Diploma Thesis (first award was granted last November).

Dr. Eleni Christofa, NTUA Alumni and Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UMass Amherst gave a Lecture on December 14th, 2015 at the Railways Amphitheater of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of NTUA titled: “Signal control strategies for improved person mobility and air quality in multimodal transportation systems”.
Akis Theofilatos has successfully defended his PhD thesis titled: “An advanced multi-faceted statistical analysis of accident probability and severity exploiting high resolution traffic and weather data“. This PhD thesis was carried out at the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering at the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens under the supervision of Prof. George Yannis.
Ioanna Pagoni, a PhD Student of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of the National technical University of Athens was awarded with the “Young Research Award in memory of Dimitris Tsamboulas” during the 7th International Congress on Transport Research – ICTR 2015 with the paper entitled “Game theoretic analysis of the supply and demand in Aviation Market”. 
Paraskevi Katahanaki, Graduate student of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens was awarded with the “Young Research Award in memory of Matthew Karlaftis” during the 7th International Congress on Transport Research in November 2015, for her paper titled: “Multivariate Statistical Methods for explaining Powered Two Wheelers’ Traffic in Urban Arterials”.
The examination of the Diploma Theses of the undergraduate students of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering took place with great success on November, 3rd and 4th, 2015.
Fotis Mertzanis has successfully defended his PhD thesis titled: “Contribution to the Investigation of Stopping Sight Distance in three-dimensional space”. This PhD thesis was carried out at the Department of Transportation, Planning and Engineering at the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens under the supervision of Emeritius Professor C. Abacoumkin.
